CHERRY ANGIOMA

At LUNIQ, we specialize in safe, effective, and scar-free cryotherapy treatments for a wide range of benign skin lesions.

Description and Appearance

A very common, harmless skin growth made up of small clusters of capillaries (tiny blood vessels) located close to the surface of the skin. These spots appear as bright red, purple, or burgundy dome-shaped bumps, usually ranging from 1 to 5 millimeters in diameter. They are smooth, round, and may be flat at first before becoming slightly raised over time. Cherry angiomas are completely benign, meaning they are not cancerous and usually do not develop into any dangerous condition.

They often appear on the torso, arms, legs, and shoulders, and can occur anywhere on the body except the palms and soles. Most people begin to notice them after age 30, and they tend to increase slowly in number with age. The exact cause is not fully understood, but their formation is linked to age-related changes in the skin’s vascular system. Genetic factors, hormonal changes, and certain chemical or environmental exposures may also contribute, though these lesions commonly occur without any clear trigger.

Preventions

Although cherry angiomas are benign and do not pose a health risk, it’s important to have any bleeding, rapidly growing, or irregularly shaped red lesions examined by a healthcare provider, as other vascular conditions or skin cancers can sometimes look similar. With proper diagnosis and simple treatment like cryotherapy, cherry angiomas can be effectively removed for both medical comfort and cosmetic reasons, restoring a smoother and clearer appearance to the skin.

Cause and Significance

Cherry angiomas develop when small clusters of dilated capillaries expand and form a dome-shaped lesion within the upper dermis, giving the growth its deep red color. In some cases, angiomas can darken, bleed slightly after injury, or develop a thin, scaly surface. They are not associated with infection or systemic disease, though rarely, the sudden appearance of numerous angiomas may occur in response to hormonal changes or certain medications.

Cryotherapy Treatment

Treatment is usually not necessary unless the lesion bleeds frequently, becomes irritated by clothing, or causes a cosmetic concern. When removal is desired, cryotherapy is  most effective and minimally invasive treatment. In this procedure, a  trained clinician applies liquid nitrogen directly to the angioma. The intense cold freezes the abnormal blood vessels, leading to coagulation (clotting) and gradual destruction of the lesion. Over the following days, the treated area may form a small crust or scab, which falls off naturally, leaving behind smooth, healthy skin.

Cryotherapy is quick, typically well-tolerated, and requires no anesthesia for small spots. Mild redness or temporary pigment changes may occur, especially in lighter or darker skin tones, but these effects are generally minor and fade over time. For larger or deeply colored angiomas, multiple treatments may be needed to achieve full clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cryotherapy in aesthetics?

Cryotherapy in aesthetics is a treatment that uses controlled cold temperatures to target and eliminate unwanted skin concerns such as warts, skin tags, moles, age spots, or to refresh and tighten the skin. The cooling effect can also boost circulation and stimulate collagen production for a rejuvenated appearance.

Yes, when performed by a trained professional, cryotherapy is generally safe. The treatment is non-invasive, quick, and has minimal side effects, though some clients may experience temporary redness, tingling, or sensitivity in the treated area.

Most cryotherapy aesthetic sessions take between 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. It’s often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure” because of how quick and convenient it is.

Cryotherapy is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, have uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe circulatory or heart conditions, cold sensitivity disorders (like Raynaud’s disease), or open wounds in the treatment area. A consultation is advised to ensure it’s the right option for you.

Results can often be noticed immediately or within a few days, depending on the treatment type. For skin lesion removal (skin tags, moles, and warts), the treated area may darken, scab, and fall off naturally in 1–2 weeks. For rejuvenation purposes, improvements in skin tone and texture may be seen gradually over several sessions.

We are located in Richmond Hill.
