MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM
At LUNIQ, we specialize in safe, effective, and scar-free cryotherapy treatments for a wide range of benign skin lesions.
What Is Molluscum Contagiosum?
Molluscum contagiosum is a common skin infection caused by a poxvirus that targets the epidermal cells, which are the outermost cells of the skin. The virus causes small, firm, dome-shaped bumps that often have a tiny dimple in the center. Inside these bumps, the virus forms viral inclusion bodies; collections of viral material seen under a microscope that help confirm the diagnosis. These lesions tend to be small between 2 to 5 mm.
The infection spreads through direct skin contact or autoinoculation, meaning it can spread to other areas of a person’s own body if they scratch or touch the lesions and then touch uninfected skin. While the bumps can appear anywhere, they are most common on the face, trunk, and limbs in children, and in adults, sometimes in the genital area.
These viral infections are usually caused by direct skin contact, shared towels and clothing, and it is more common in children, it is treatable with cryotherapy which destroys the virus as well as treating the aesthetics of the skin.
Preventions
Prevention it’s always important, avoid scratching irritated skin, cover the lesions to prevent spreading of the infection, keep high levels of hygiene, and make sure to keep your skin dry.
Why Cryotherapy Works
Cryotherapy is used to treat molluscum contagiosum because the virus sits in the superficial epidermis, mainly inside infected keratinocytes. Freezing with liquid nitrogen causes icecrystal formation that ruptures these keratinocytes and destroys the viral inclusion bodies containing the poxvirus. By eliminating these infected superficial cells, cryotherapy reduces the viral load in the skin and helps prevent further autoinoculation and spread of lesions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is cryotherapy in aesthetics?
Cryotherapy in aesthetics is a treatment that uses controlled cold temperatures to target and eliminate unwanted skin concerns such as warts, skin tags, moles, age spots, or to refresh and tighten the skin. The cooling effect can also boost circulation and stimulate collagen production for a rejuvenated appearance.
Is cryotherapy safe?
Yes, when performed by a trained professional, cryotherapy is generally safe. The treatment is non-invasive, quick, and has minimal side effects, though some clients may experience temporary redness, tingling, or sensitivity in the treated area.
How long does a session take?
Most cryotherapy aesthetic sessions take between 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. It’s often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure” because of how quick and convenient it is.
Who should avoid cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, have uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe circulatory or heart conditions, cold sensitivity disorders (like Raynaud’s disease), or open wounds in the treatment area. A consultation is advised to ensure it’s the right option for you.
When will I see results?
Results can often be noticed immediately or within a few days, depending on the treatment type. For skin lesion removal (skin tags, moles, and warts), the treated area may darken, scab, and fall off naturally in 1–2 weeks. For rejuvenation purposes, improvements in skin tone and texture may be seen gradually over several sessions.
